Field Trips
At River Tech, students engage in thoughtfully planned field trips that transform lessons into real-world experiences.
Our carefully curated trips provide real-world applications and immersive experiences that textbooks alone cannot offer. We offer monthly excursions, with more frequent trips during the summer. From hands-on learning at local farms to historical insights gained in museum halls, these experiences foster a deeper understanding of curriculum content.
Update: Starting ing Fall of 2025, we will be changing how we plan field trips. Field trips will take place:
-
After school at 2:30 PM
-
On weekends, typically Saturdays
-
On school holidays, such as Columbus Day or MLK Day
-
During school breaks, such as Winter Break or Spring Break
Field trips will be optional, with spots offered on a first-come, first-served basis. River Tech students will have priority registration, and if spots remain, registration will be opened to the homeschooling community and family members! We plan to offer field trips monthly, with more frequent trips during warmer months. Each field trip will have a fee (starting at $20). With this change, the field trips will be open for siblings (and parents) also. In other words, we’ll plan a trip, and then if you want to go, you sign up and come! This new structure helps us maintain a strong classroom focus while still offering exciting learning experiences outside of school.

Coeur Climbing Company
Our River Tech students had a fun physical challenge today - rock climbing - they all had a blast! 🧗
At Coeur Climbing Company, the gym was buzzing with energy as students tackled routes of varying difficulty, from beginner-friendly walls to more advanced climbs that tested their skills and courage.

Higgens Point Hike
December 4, 2024
Oh we loved this hike at Higgens point so much!! Such spectacular views of the lake and of eagles! We spotted a few! Our students lovely voices probably scared them off a little so we didn’t see them super close up but close enough! We also saw tons of dead fish washed out on the shore and kids got to learn about Ecclesiastic wisdom: there is a season for everything: a time to be born and a time to die, and this is a season for the fish to die. The eagles and seagulls were having a feast though!

Post Falls Police Department
This week we went to Post Falls Police Department and learned so many new things! Kids asked the officers so many good questions! They loved learning about what equipment and tools the police uses, they loved checking out the room where crime evidence is collected and learning about protocols and procedures police uses. Our students were excited to climb into the Rescue 1 vehicle and the police car! They were curious about what police does every day and they learned that Post Falls is a safe community that does not usually have any major crimes. This was a great educational field trip!

Quemiln Park
August 28, 2024
Such a fun beach day at Quemlin park! Many kids got in the water and swam, some played capture the flag, others dodge ball or volleyball, and some older kids went on a hike. We had such a great time!

During the first week of school, we got to visit 11 Acres farm at Green Bluff! The students got to pull their own carrots and beetroots out of the ground and have the incredible experience of biting into freshly hand-picked produce!
We then had a Student Farmer’s market at school, where they got to sell their produce to parents and raise funds for the school. So much fun and real life learning!

God of Science Workshop
May 27, 2024
This week we had a special guest: the kid’s pastor from Sun City church, who brought some exciting science experiments to show our kids. We learned about the periodic table, about chemical and physical change, they saw a (safe) mini explosion that got them all super excited! Then we learned about electricity, and had some liquid nitrogen ice cream! Pastor Chris explained and showed how all science points to God. We definitely had a blast!

Dodge ball, wall climbing, rope climbing, splits in the air, “walking” on walls, foam pit battles, zip line, slackline, basketball, and lots of bouncing - two hours of so much fun at the Flying Squirrel! And it feels like we had the whole place all for ourselves!

Minecraft Exhibition
October 4, 2023
Super fun field trip to the NW Museum of Arts and culture and their Minecraft exhibition! Kids had a blast! I just learned that they also have Minecraft Education edition, with science and math games - something to check out!

We had a super educational and fun field trip to Spokane County Water Resource Center! The students learned about the water cycle, the Aquifer (underground water), and the water cleaning process in nature and in the facility. They talked about how the water gets polluted, how humans contribute to pollution, and how we can take our part in reducing water pollution and be responsible users of water. For the younger kids there was a lot of hands on learning and the older ones went on a tour around the whole facility. The kids had a lot of fun!

Cat Tales Wildlife Center
September 13, 2023
What a great field trip to Cat Tales Wildlife Center! We saw tigers, bears, pumas, bob cats, lynx, wolfs, foxes and more. We had a tour guide and kids asked many interesting questions and learned some facts about these animals. Some of our kids even got to feed some raw meat to a tiger!
School Year 2022-2023
This week we had a visit from a local robotics team NIRB. They brought the Lego robotics kits Spike Prime, NXT robots, and their own remote controlled “Gipper” that the team constructed from a TETRIX robotics kit. The kids got to try out all the robots and see what their coding skills can be used for. Some of these robots can be coded in Scratch, which our kids are learning in our school curriculum. We also now have a wonderful opportunity to borrow a mega classroom Cubelets robotics set for two weeks from Gizmo at the University of Idaho. We are learning to code Cubelets several days a week now! Kids are having lots of fun learning!

3D Shapes Workshop
March 1, 2023
Continuing to learn about and create real 3D shapes. Today we introduced Platonic solids and the kids learned to identify and draw an Octahedron and then build it on their own with popsicle sticks. Many of them are also learning to create 3D shapes in our 3D modeling class. We showed them a few cool animations and they seemed to be really motivated to learn about the shapes because of what they saw they can create through 3D modeling. Fun stuff!
Student Life
Robotics
At River Tech School, we’re all about robotics! Our students get hands-on with VEX Go kits, and our middle and high schoolers love competing in fun contests. We even borrow kits from Gizmo and the library to keep things fresh. Plus, our workshops let students learn more about engineering and robotics making it a great way to explore their interests!

Musicals
At River Tech, we love putting on a great show with our musical program! Each year, we host an awesome musical and choir performance, and we always aim to make it even better the last. We've performed Jungle Book, Annie, Lion King, Greatest Showman, Journey to Bethlehem, and we're currently preparing for Frozen. We excited to welcome homeschoolers to join the fun, as we mix in dance, band, singing, and acting for a fantastic experience.
Coding
Students get to dive into the exciting world of computers with our hands-on coding curriculum! They start with block-based coding in Scratch, making it fun to grasp the basics. From there, they begin creating awesome games in Unity using C#. They get to code robots and boost their computer literacy, ensuring they can navigate the digital world seamlessly.
